A record filled with couples conflict and undying love, Born To Die, released yesterday to much criticism. Born To Die has been the talk of the music industry for weeks and has taken the number 1 spot in over 12 countries, including the U.S., per iTunes Top 100 Albums chart. Lana Del Rey has produced a sound that is strange, wonderful and obsessive.
Del Rey’s smoldering voice charges over slinky and playful lyrics and this album has you wondering what Del Rey has experienced in life or otherwise fantasizes about. She paints pictures of teenagers living the wild life, meeting a boy that causes a confession of eternal love, and even being a glamorous boy toy for older men. The stories keep coming and roll off her tongue leaving the listener in a trance like state.
For most, this album will be your guilty pleasure. You may find yourself in a closed room listening for hours; yet dare not to admit it to others. Campy and comedic at first it took about 6 or 7 spins for me to be completely sold. I guess I wanted to convince myself I would not like her but she gave me no choice.
Past persona or not, today the industry has Lana Del Rey and there is no need to speculate her past especially since no one really knew it to exist. Born to Die is miles away from winning a Rebecca Black Award and it may not quite be a Grammy but it is an interesting portrayal of art meets music.
