Human Again, Ingrid Michaelson’s fifth studio album was released
January 24, 2012. The chosen title gives a summary of what Michaelson’s song
content embodies. Each track symbolizes the moment in a relationship where the
man has fooled her into believing this was “forever”. She now realizes the false
lines she has been fed and has become aware of the truth, as the pain of
reality sets in.
“I’m Through”, a touching piano accompanied ballad, takes you to a
small restaurant where Michaelson is analyzing her first evening out with another
man. Everything that has occurred is compared to her past love, and shows she is
having difficulty moving on. “Ribbons”
shows how her relationship was wrapped in ribbons as if she was safe, but are now
quickly unraveling. These story lines are typical as the listener welcomes each
track.
The album is a blend between engineered tracks laid with orchestral
strings and woodwinds yet contains acoustic style tracks with just a guitar or
piano along with Michaelson’s voice trickling over each note. I am personally attracted to her simplistic
arrangements like in “Keep Warm”, “I’m Through”, and “Ribbons” as opposed to
her upbeat songs, “End of the World” and “Blood Brothers”, though these tracks
are amiable as well.
This album is Ingrid Michaelson’s most personal tribute written to
date. Lyrically, Michaelson is straight forward and not holding back her pain,
for it is all about feeling “Human Again.”
