Ingrid Michaelson graced Pittsburghers with her presence at
the Carnegie Library Music Hall in Homestead on May 11, 2012. Her intro song to
take the stage was as if she was coming out as a UFC fighter ready to take on
the opponent as the theater echoed Ke$ha’s “Blow”. She donned the stage in her stiletto black
booties, jeans, a black graphic tank, and of course her black rimmed glasses.
Michaelson’s demeanor was cute but anything but coy blowing
up the stage with her first track from Human
Again¸ ”Fire” with two female guitarists (Allie Moss and Bess Rogers)
equipped with tom-toms as they followed with “Palm of Your Hand”. This multi-talented
musician began with her guitar, then moved onto ukulele and of course took a
seat at the piano playing “Corner of Your Heart” and “Do it Now”. There
were several comedic interludes between each couple of songs which I did not
realize we were in the presence of a comedian as well.
The magic really heated up with her Elvis Presley cover of
“Can’t Help Falling in Love”. The audience gently sang with Michaelson as she
tickled the piano keys and even seamlessly added a variety of spot on harmonies
to compliment her angelic voice. It was
almost as if we were sitting in the middle of a choir accompanying the musician
as the congregation added serenity to her ballad. As if this unison anthem was not enough,
everyone joined in for her next song “Way I am”, probably one of her most
notable tracks from Girls and Boys as
she rocked it on the ukulele decorated with a loose red ribbon.
She closed the evening with a “We Found Love” cover by Rihanna
and her encore set ended sweetly as each band member gathered around one
microphone and took turns singing the lyrics to “You and I”.
