El Camino was released to the masses in December 2011 and has been the talk of the music industry for weeks. Their album Brothers put Dan Auerbach and Patrick Carney on the map back in 2010 winning 3 Grammy Awards including Best Rock Performance by a Duo or Group, Best Alternative Music Album, and Best Recording Package. This duo was destined to bring the raw, organic sound of rock and roll back into our living rooms.
If the sound of Brothers could have been said to be stuck in the “Mississippi Mud”, then El Camino is cruising at rapid speeds down Highway I-10. El Camino is a much more accelerated blues supported album and better for those long car rides, compared to Brothers which has you drifting on your couch.
The BIG song of the album could easily be "Little Black Submarines". With over four minutes of rock bliss, this song has the quintessence of the smash hit "Stairway to Heaven" by Led Zeppelin. Perhaps an iconic influence to The Black Keys?
As he mentioned in Rolling Stone Magazine last week, Patrick Carney has received criticism for his unpolished drumming style and does not pretend to be anything but a novice. His style is that of Meg White’s from the White Stripes, in that her amateur sound is what helped to make that band quite special. Dan Auerbach, on the other hand, has been surrounded by the blues growing up and has had a handful of bands prior to forming The Black Keys. His experiences and exposure to the industry has created his basic, stripped down rock & roll guitar riffs and are what keeps this band true to their roots.
Check out their website for the upcoming tour and a listen to their first single "Lonely Boy".
